By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

W
ant to know how to really scare your neighbors this Halloween? Here are some surefire ways to frighten any trick-or-treaters who come by tonight (if you dare)!

Scary Decorating Tip #1: Allow the fake garland to take over your kitchen. “We haven’t seen Alice since she went to the kitchen to make a sandwich.”

I think I just saw it move. Did you?

“Top Design” Recap: The Final Four Are In the House
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

L
ook who showed up as the guest judge again this week. It’s Jeff Lewis, from Bravo TV’s Flipping Out. I’m not sure where Kelly Wearstler and her big hair and crazy outfits have been, but Jeff was such a great judge that I hardly missed her fingerless gloves and leg warmers this week.

In last night’s episode, they were down to the Final Four contestants: Ondine, Nathan, Eddie, and Preston. In the poll I took last week, you were pretty much split as to who should win this thing: Nathan or Preston. Nathan had 41% of the vote and Preston had 40%. (Eddie and Ondine lagged way behind with 16% and 4%, respectively.)

Fun Halloween Decorating Ideas
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

A
re you the creative kind of person who goes all out for Halloween, wowing the neighborhood with your amazing decorations each year? Do you host frighteningly good parties where everyone shows up in clever costumes?

I’m not. I’ve just got the usual jack-o-lanterns on the front porch and fall decorations around the house. My daughter Lily told me yesterday, “We’re not being creative enough for Halloween!”

You may recall that Lily decorated the house for me earlier this month, covering all the walls and doors with pictures of witches, black cats, pumpkins, and ghosts (boo!). You can see her handiwork here. Since then, she has continued to decorate the house within an inch of its life. But apparently it is still not enough.

She loves looking at other peoples’ blogs with me to see their creative Halloween decor. Lily declared Living Locurto “the best blog ever!” after seeing some of Amy’s Halloween posts, including this adorable witchy pumpkin. Amy has a big Halloween blog party in progress that you have to check out if you haven’t already.

Remember this Martha Stewart magazine Halloween cover?

“Do Not Use” This Bathroom
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

H
alloween is right around the corner, so I thought I’d post some scary MLS photos. It frightens me to think a Realtor is trying to sell a house with these pictures of the bathroom! Here I thought it was bad when that real estate agent took close-ups of the three dressed-up toilets in the red brick house I showed you a few weeks ago. At least those bathrooms looked clean.

For these pictures, the agent (and owners) couldn’t be bothered to close the medicine cabinet doors or take all the junk off the sink first.

But wait, what’s that yellow tape in the sink?

Lovely.

Well, don’t worry. I won’t use this bathroom! I have a feeling no one else will want to, either.

Please help me welcome one of my blog’s new sponsors: Cottage Magpie!

I’ve been a fan of Angela’s popular decorating blog for a long time. Angela says:

~

“I talk to so many people who think that they can’t have a charming home (or cottage) because their house isn’t inherently charming (ranch style, for example), or because they don’t have any money. So I’m trying to prove that it *is* possible, because for sure, my house is not charming, and I don’t have much money to work with, either.”

Tickled Pink (& Purple & Peach): Victorian Painted Ladies
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

R
emember the Historic House Tour I told you I went on a couple of weeks ago in Columbia Tusculum, Ohio? I already showed you some photos of it in my Porches on Parade for Fall post but thought I’d show you some more, including a few I took inside.

The neighborhood has rows of Victorian Painted Ladies like this one perched on the hills overlooking the river. This pink and purple-painted one was my daughter Lily’s favorite. She wants us to paint our house these colors now!

Hooked on House Tours: The Fall Party Starts Here!
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

Who doesn’t love a good house tour?

Well, if you don’t, then you’ve come to the wrong place. Today kicks off the Hooked on House Tours Blog Party–one big, giant Fantasy Open House tour around the blogosphere.

I’m putting a twist on the usual blog party this time around, though. Get this:

There will be a prize for one lucky blogger!

One week from today I’ll draw the name of one of the participating bloggers, and they will receive a free button-ad (125 x 125) in my sidebar for the entire month of November. It never hurts to get a little more attention for your blog, right? It’s just my way of thanking all of you who are joining the party today.

NOTE TO BLOGGERS: Before adding your link, be sure to follow these 2 simple rules. If you don’t, your link will be removed, so listen up!
You must link to the actual post, not your general blog address. This is called the permalink. That way people can still find your post days and weeks later without scrolling down. Right-click on the title of your post and copy the link to get the permalink. For example, my blog URL is http://hookedonhouses.net. The permalink to this post is http://hookedonhouses.net/2008/10/23/hooked-on-house-tours-the-fall-party-starts-here/.
You must link back to this post and tell your readers about the party. This ensures that everyone on the tour gets plenty of visitors. Don’t be greedy and keep them all for yourself! (Use the permalink for this post that I mentioned in Rule #1.)

I hope you’ll help us get the word out about the party by Stumbling your favorite tours, mentioning the blog party on message boards, and telling your friends. I want everyone to get plenty of visitors–and comments!–today.

On Monday, as promised, I’ll be posting photos from the house tour I took in the historic town of Columbia Tusculum, Ohio, so be sure to come back for that! In the meantime, you can see some of the town’s beautiful Victorian Painted Ladies that I photographed here, all decked out for fall. Today I want these other bloggers to get all the attention!

I can’t wait to see the fabulous house tours you all have for us. Ready…set…link!

“Top Design” Recap: Lighting Up a Room
By JULIA @ HOOKEDONHOUSES.NET

B
elieve it or not, last night I finally had a chance to watch “Top Design” for the first time in several weeks. Their challenge was to design a room around a Swarovski chandelier. These aren’t your typical chandeliers, however, so it forced the designers to get a little creative.

Take a look at the how the rooms turned out and then tell me which was your favorite–and which designer should’ve gone home:
